Folding Books 2 and Drawing Perspective

The group was given the option of making another folding book, or working on their own drawing.

Observations

Three people decided to have another go with the books and the others brought in objects or photographs to use as their subjects for drawings.

Nan was determined to develop her understanding of drawing form in perspective.

Lorraine said she hoped to achieve more accurate representations of circles in their correct perspective. A few sketches were made.

Later, Lorraine moved onto a different object:

Rebecca decided on some roses for her subject - based, I believe, on thoughts of Valentine's Day. By the time I got around to seeing Rebecca, this first drawing had already been produced with water-soluble pencils. Rebecca's somewhat, throw-away background of 'just put something that isn't the table' works surprisingly well and somehow gives background activity to an otherwise still subject.

Rebecca's second drawing, using chalk pastels and charcoal, was quite ambitious, given the remaining time available, and I suggested perhaps concentrating on adding detail to just one of her many roses. In the end, only a few of the roses visible in her glass were drawn and black charcoal was experimented with to highlight some of the darker areas of red and green.

Stan decided to work from a photograph this week and to both reproduce dimensions and perspective. Rather than using a grid, he measured using his pencil and scaled up the image.

Kathy, Mags, and Tracy worked on little booklets, but none were complete enough by the end of the session to photograph. However, there was some improvement in construction and finish on the previous week.

Vee was away this week.

Techniques demonstrated and/or mentioned

Using rectangular or square shapes with straight lines to work out perspective before drawing circular shapes. This is a technique often used in life drawing, but equally applicable to still life and landscape work. It can help the eyes from being distracted by the illusion corrected by the brain.
