Christmas Cards

In this session we experimented in producing repeatable Christmas Card designs.

The work produced in this session will be continued in the next session, with some people producing cards and some working with landscapes or scenes of their choice.


 

After a short demonstration of a few stencilling and printing techniques, everyone got started.

Mags really excelled in this session and created some very good results quite quickly - embracing the techniques of stencil printing coupled with a small production line. (Mouse over and click on image below to see more).

Stan - Snowman

Stan tried out a number of experiments (click on image to see more) before focusing his attention on the snowman theme. Sometimes using the stencil to stipple paint through and sometimes using the stencil's cut-out to stipple paint over, a number of images were produced with different and interesting effects. I particularly like the blue marking technique in the background of the above image.

Nan tried out a number of ideas (click on image for more) and I particularly liked her candles.

Lorraine - scribbled tree

Lorraine did several experiments and in the process produced this lovely tree, which expresses both Christmas and a winter environment. I can almost see it growing out of the side of a snow-covered mountain slope. The scribbled pen and rough paint washes work together extremely well.

Kathy was soon into factory production that would have given Hallmark Cards a run for their money! By the end of the session, everyone had been presented with one of her designs - and she was already working on collage ideas. (Click on image for more).

Vee tried out a couple of different techniques - stencils and brush strokes. I liked the use of stancil style (below) and her sweeping brush effect worked particularly well (click on image to see more).

Rebecca used her brush technique to good effect on this tree. (Click on image to see more).

(Left) Tracy produced some nice snow-on-tree effects with covered glue and introduced some nice sky effects - possibly originating from her previous experience when we had the session on painting skies.



Techniques discussed

Using stencils and cut-outs to paint through with a stippling action so that paint is delivered to the paper downwards and not pushed under stencil edges. Also using sponges to apply paint over stencils.

Making simple stamps from card or other materials.



Suggestions and observations

I think that those who used a mix of colours in the rendering of their trees, realised qualities that added dimensional depth and variation.
