Matchboxes
This week we took an art school favourite, based around the light-hearted theme, of 'the secret life of a matchbox'.
Stan
I wasn't sure what Stan had planned... but it was definitely going to
be colourful...
The simplicity of shapes and layering of colours expresses Stan's impression
of an Autumn scene and turning the matchbox over, creates either trees,
shadows, or reflections.

John
John used his matchbox to convey humour with wordplay through a light-hearted
distortion of branding, coupled with an invitational quote that declares
the joke is intended.

Mags
It wasn't so much the alien theme, but more so, which planet Mags thought
she was on this week... With great vigour and humour, the scene continued
to develop and expand in surreal cuteness. Was it an art gallery or a
museum? It certainly wasn't stopping at a mere matchbox!

Kathy
Kathy arrived with a flat-pack and promptly began building large matchboxes
- originally intended for (and still to become) an Advent Calendar. It
was quickly apparent that nothing would reach completion in the short
time available in class... but I think Kathy had fun folding and gluing
- and that's the main thing.
Helen
Among her objects, Helen brought in a big box of stamps, of which the
one used on the front of her matchbox seemed to inspire what was to
follow. I like the simplicity of the design, suspension of the shell
and beads, as if caught on a fishing line or tangled in a rope, the
wooden [feeling of driftwood] floor, and emotive typography. The feel
of a tranquil, summer seaside scene is nicely captured. You can almost
feel the heat and smell the sea.

Elizabeth
Elizabeth took as her inspiration, a Swiss view from one of her holidays.
The mountainous scene starts to unfold from the matchbox, revealing
a cunning little cable car.

Tracy
Tracy
arrived with a few ideas, but selected this one - a turbulent pond.
The little ducks float by, in their colourful water, without a care
in the world.
A final embellishment of feathers and another [slightly hastily cut]
duck, completed the final scene.

Comments
This was my last session with the art group, before Caroline takes over in September.
I am grateful that we have enjoyed the sessions together and it has been rewarding to see the progression of people's work over a relatively short period of time.
My aim has always been to introduce different aspects of art
and,
from the work produced, I can see the affinity different people have with
different mediums and materials, together with personal styles which are
beginning to come through individual's work.
Lorraine wasn't able to attend this week.
