The following work represents a sample of the light sculpture produced by members of the riversMEET Art Group.

The session began with a teacher demonstration of how light from one source produces commonly recognised and anticipated shadow effects, but light from more than one source can create some more subtle and unexpected effects. The group were shown that moving light sources quickly around an object can also create the impression of shape-changing and movement.

Taking this example a stage further, light can be projected through cut-out shapes onto a wall or a translucent screen. By placing lights in different positions you can create shadows that produce the appearance of movement and a variety of colour blends that engender several different moods:

Ann got straight into experimenting and very quickly started to produce some interesting effects. Ann made a number of alterations to her stencil screen before finally deciding on an effect that produced an abstract flame quality. Caroline tried out several ideas - some more successful than others - before ending up with this very subtle pattern, reminiscent of moons.

Kathy worked diligently to find lights, screens, stencils and the distances between them all, that produced the most effective display combinations - even scrunching up the translucent paper and then opening it up again.

Although the spacial distances were not achieved to create clearly projected images on the screen, some of the soft and misty effects produced mysterious qualities and depths.

Michelle did a number of experiments, but unfortunately I wasn't able to get a photograph during the session.
